Watson Says Goodbye

Zachary Walter - SA Columnist

ST. ANDREWS- After a career spanning decades, Tom Watson has said his final goodbye to St. Andrews golf links, the home of golf. After coming close, but failing to make the cut, just as Nicklaus crossed the Swilcan Bridge one last time five years ago, so did Watson.

After kissing the side of the bridge, he stood on it, to a standing ovation, as well as photographs from the crowd of onlookers as the sun was setting. You couldn't have asked for a more picture perfect ending, other than Watson making the cut.

Born September 4th, 1949, Watson has won several tournaments, eight major championships in all. He is 6th overall in majors won.

This was not Watson's last Open Championship, but this was his last Championship at The Old Course. His continued competitiveness, despite his age, shows what a complete player he has been, notably in bad weather conditions, such as today where winds prevailed-over 30 MPH gusts.

He lives in Kansas, with his wife and children, and continues to play on the Champions Tour.
