DENVER – Morehead State stunned the University of Louisville 62-61 behind Demonte Harper’s three-pointer from the top of the key with 4.2 seconds left.
The fourth-seeded Cardinals played the last 8:51 without Preston Knowles, who left the game with a sprained toe.
U of L suffered an emotional blow with its senior captain having to hop off the floor on one leg and the Eagles took advantage.
Terrance Hill connected on three three-pointers as Morehead completed a 13-4 spurt to take a 57-52 lead with 5:22 left. With momentum squarely on its side and neutral Pepsi Center fans quickly converting, Morehead watched U of L fight back into the game.
Peyton Siva missed a layup, but Terrence Jennings – who missed two first half layups that he put up soft – dunked back the follow. Siva twice more drove to the basket and dished to Jennings for two more scores. Elisha Justice knocked down a three-pointer with 1:20 left completing a 9-0 run.
The Eagles had some fight left too. Kenneth Faried’s two free throws made the score 61-59 and when Justice missed the front end of a 1-and-1, it set the stage for Harper’s heroics.
Speaking after the game, Louisville coach Rick Pitino said: "This was as tough a loss as I've had in coaching and I've been coaching a long time. And after tonight, maybe too long."
